West Tanfield boasts a village shop with post office, Westwoods Country Store and Cafe, a superb riverside pub, The Bull Inn, and a fabulous bistro, The Bruce Arms.

St.Nicholas Church lies in the heart of the village, dating back to 13th Century. Next door to the church sits The Marmion Tower, "a fine 15th-century gatehouse , with a beautiful oriel window." There is also an 18th Century Methodist Chapel.
For fishermen Tanfield Lodge Fishing Lake offers day or evening tickets between March and September, while a catch and release sheme is in operation on the river for residents of the apartment.
For walkers Ripon Rowel, Yoredale Way, the Staveley Circle and the Way of the Roses are all close by, as well as local riverside walks. Situated at the foothills of the Yorkshire Dales this stunning landscape is also easily accessible from West Tanfield.
For cyclists we are directly on the route of the 2014 Tour de France. There are also many other local cycle routes.
For family entertainment Lightwater Valley theme park is 3 miles away, and The Forbidden Corner is also close by. Slenningford watermill caravan,camping and activity site is a mile away
For shoppers Ripon (10 mins drive), Harrogate (30 mins drive), York (45 mins drive), Leeds (45 mins drive) and Newcastle (1 hour drive) are all very accessible .
For artists, there is The Stables art studio and workshop, for browsing or short courses.
For beer lovers Masham houses the breweries and visitor centres of both Theakstons and Black Sheep real ale. The Hambleton Ale microbrewery is also close by.
Historic houses and gardens close by include Newby Hall, Fountains Abbey, Jervaulx Abbey, Ripley Castle, Middleham Castle, and Thorpe Perrow Arboretum.
York Minster and Ripon Cathedral offer stunning religiously-inspired architecture.
